you do not mention program or cellphone brand, so..
do like i do for a ZTE cellphone that is not recognized.
kick it's butt.
i am running centos 6.6, cellphone ZTE z990g.
i plug cellphone into usb port, then use 'disk utility' to mount it
as;
/media/37EF-0802.
[my cellphones id, yours will be diff as well as names below]

next, i open konqueror file browser, open /media and i see;
/media

i then copy Camera to where ever on hard drive, unmount cellphone,
move images and/or videos to appropriate paths.
i have used this procedure for 2 other cellphones that where not
recognized. so, should work for you.
