I posted that email as a reply to Chris Mauritz' post - jut to point out 
that the drivers for the 9000 series cards are not included in the 2.4 
kernels and therefore are not present in Centos 3.* or RHEL3.

You are right to note that the driver is included in the 2.6 kernel 
series (but not older than 2.6.9) and also in Centos 4 and RHEL4 as well.
