Point 1. I get the digest version of the mailing list. I find it most useful to get directly any reply to my questions in addition to the response send to the list. This item is on BUZILLA and I applied the recommended work-around provided there but I am still seeing this message: /etc/init.d/microcode_ctl: microcode device /dev/cpu/microcode doesn't exist? What is this process? Do I need it on a single CPU box? If as I infer from the BUGZILLA report /dev/cpu/microcode is a (evidently missing) symlink then where should it point to? What are the risks caused by its absence? # find / -name "*microcode*" /usr/src/kernels/2.6.9-5.0.3.EL-smp-i686/include/config/microcode /usr/src/kernels/2.6.9-5.0.3.EL-i686/include/config/microcode /usr/src/kernels/2.6.9-5.0.3.EL-hugemem-i686/include/config/microcode /usr/share/man/man8/microcode_ctl.8.gz /sbin/microcode_ctl /lib/modules/2.6.9-5.0.3.EL/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/microcode.ko /etc/rc.d/rc4.d/K99microcode_ctl /etc/rc.d/rc0.d/K99microcode_ctl /etc/rc.d/rc2.d/K99microcode_ctl /etc/rc.d/rc6.d/K99microcode_ctl /etc/rc.d/rc1.d/K99microcode_ctl /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/K99microcode_ctl /etc/rc.d/init.d/microcode_ctl /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/K99microcode_ctl /etc/firmware/microcode.dat # -- *** e-mail is not a secure channel *** mailto:byrnejb.<token>@harte-lyne.ca James B.
