Jean-Pierre,

I don't have an answer per se, but this command does work for me as
root. Are you attempting to do this as root or by using sudo? I am
running Centos4 U2 as well.

If you are doing this with sudo you will need to specify the entire
path to get swapon to run /sbin/swapon -s

If you are doing this as root, do you get an error of some sort?
