CDC continues to respond to the outbreak of H5N1 bird flu in dairy cows that has so far affected 151 herds in 12 states, with 4 human cases. Recent CDC activities include finalizing agreements with 8 commercial laboratories to develop tests to identify A(H5) infections in people; posting a flyer that describes and illustrates the procedure for collecting, storing, and shipping conjunctival specimens for testing using the A(H5) assay; and reporting that extensive efforts to sequence or isolate virus from a human case in Colorado were unsuccessful.
