Update on CDC’s Avian Influenza A(H5N1) “Bird Flu” Response Activities

CDC’s response to the outbreak of A(H5N1) bird flu in dairy cows most recently includes posting an H5N1 Science Agenda summarizing key research issues the agency hopes to address; providing technical assistance to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, which launched an H5N1 bird flu seroprevalence study of people exposed to sick cows; and continued work with states and public health laboratories to monitor influenza virus testing.

Updated CDC Guidance for Fair Organizers and Exhibitors to Help Prevent Spread of Influenza Between Animals and People

CDC has updated considerations for fair organizers and those preparing to exhibit animals at local and state agricultural fairs. Implementation of recommended measures can help prevent the spread of influenza A viruses between animals (e.g., poultry, pigs, cattle) and people and allow these important activities to continue safely.

ACIP Recommends Updated 2024-2025 Flu Vaccines for Fall/Winter Virus Season

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) voted unanimously in favor of annual flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older with rare exceptions, with few changes to the annual recommendations this season compared to last. CDC encourages providers to begin their flu vaccination planning now and to vaccinate patients as indicated once 2024-2025 influenza vaccines become available.
