Seasonal influenza activity continues to decline. Seven flu-related deaths in children were reported this week, bringing the total reported this season to 164. One of the seven deaths occurred in 2023, bringing the total for that season to 185.
Update on CDC’s Avian Influenza A(H5N1) Response Activities
CDC’s response to the outbreak of A(H5N1) bird flu in dairy cattle includes continued support of states in monitoring people with exposure to infected animals; efforts to make personal protective equipment (PPE) available for affected farmworkers; and inoculating ferrets (a model for humans) with the human A(H5N1) virus to assess the related severity of illness and transmissibility.
CDC Flu Surveillance Can Detect Avian Influenza A(H5N1) Virus Infections in the US
CDC’s robust flu surveillance system consists of multiple platforms that monitor flu activity across the country and are routinely used to detect rare human infections with new influenza viruses. In the current A(H5N1) outbreak, this surveillance system is enhanced with monitoring of exposed people and analysis of genetic sequences from affected cattle.
