Burden of Flu Preliminary CDC estimates are that at least 22 million people were sick with flu, 10 million people visited a medical provider for flu, 230,000 people were hospitalized with flu, and 14,000 people died from flu illness/complications from Oct 1-Dec 31, 2022. Flu surveillance doesn’t capture all U.S. flu cases, so CDC provides estimates to better reflect the true burden of flu.
CDC updated flu vaccination coverage estimates on Friday January 6, 2023. While there have been some improvements in coverage, there are still concerning drops in coverage, including coverage among pregnant people, which as of November 2022 was nearly 12 percentage points lower than during November 2021 and nearly 20 percentage points lower than two years ago.
Getting a flu vaccine can still be beneficial as long as flu viruses are spreading in your community. There’s still time, get a flu vaccine today. http://getmyflushot.org
