Current Risk to Public from Recently Identified Bird Flu Viruses is Low
Based on genetic sequence data, current H5N1 bird flu viruses detected in the U.S. during late 2021-2022 are different from earlier H5N1 bird flu viruses that circulated in much of the world in the past. They lack changes that in the past have been associated with viruses spreading more easily to poultry, infecting people more easily, and causing severe illness in people.
