Current Risk to Public from Recently Identified Bird Flu Viruses is Low

Based on genetic sequence data, current H5N1 bird flu viruses detected in the U.S. during late 2021-2022 are different from earlier H5N1 bird flu viruses that circulated in much of the world in the past. They lack changes that in the past have been associated with viruses spreading more easily to poultry, infecting people more easily, and causing severe illness in people.

Updated CDC Data Show Concerning Drops in Flu Vaccine Coverage

CDC flu vaccine coverage data continues to show concerning trends. As of January 2022, coverage is lower compared with last season including in groups at higher risk for severe flu illness, like pregnant people, infants, and young children. Coverage also was lower among racial and ethnic minorities compared with previous seasons. Understanding and reversing these drops in coverage is important.
