About Acute Flaccid Myelitis

Acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) is an uncommon but serious neurologic condition. It affects the nervous system, specifically the area of the spinal cord called gray matter, which causes the muscles and reflexes in the body to become weak.

30th ADA Anniversary

July 26, 2020 marks the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a civil rights law that promotes the inclusion of people with disabilities in every aspect of life. Learn what CDC is doing to support disability inclusion, which can improve health for all.

Protect Newborns

The two best ways to prevent group B strep (GBS) disease during the first week of a newborn’s life are:

• Testing pregnant women for GBS bacteria

• Giving antibiotics, during labor, to women at increased risk

Unfortunately, experts have not identified effective ways to prevent GBS disease in people older than one week old.
