Weekly U.S. Influenza Surveillance Report

​According to CDC’s latest FluView report (Feb 9 – 15), national levels of flu-like illness remain high and are expected to remain above baseline for weeks to come. CDC estimates that so far this season, there have been at least 29 million flu illnesses, 280,000 hospitalizations and 16,000 deaths from flu.

Interim Estimates of 2019-20 Seasonal Influenza Vaccine Effectiveness

According to CDC’s recent MMWR, early flu vaccine effectiveness (VE) estimates show that so far the 2019-20 seasonal flu vaccine is reducing flu-related doctor’s visit by about half overall. In children, the vaccine is reducing doctor’s visit for flu by 55%.

​Flu antiviral drugs are recommended for people experiencing flu symptoms who are at high risk of developing serious flu complications. Although other people with mild illness who are not at high risk may also be treated early with antiviral drugs by their doctor, most people who are otherwise healthy and get flu do not need to be treated with antiviral drugs.
