Caring for Someone Sick with Flu

When caring for people sick with flu, avoid being face to face with the person and wash your hands with soap and water often and right away. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub. If caring for a sick child, place their chin on your shoulder when holding them so they will not cough in your face. People experiencing severe symptoms should obtain medical care right away.

Treat Flu with Antiviral Medication

Antiviral drugs can lessen symptoms and shorten the time you are sick by 1 or 2 days. For people at high risk of serious flu complications, treatment with antiviral drugs can mean the difference between milder or more serious illness possibly resulting in a hospital stay. CDC recommends prompt treatment for people who have flu or suspected flu and who are at high risk of serious flu complications.
