Weekly Influenza Surveillance

Flu activity is low in the United States at this time, but flu outbreaks can happen as early as October. Flu causes millions of illnesses, hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations and thousands of deaths every season.

More than 40 million doses of 2015-16 flu vaccine have been distributed in the United States. This season’s vaccines have been updated to better match circulating viruses. CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months and older. While how well the vaccine works can vary, flu vaccine is the best way to prevent influenza illness and its complications. Flu vaccination benefits include reducing flu illnesses, doctors' visits, and missed work and school due to flu, as well as preventing more serious complications, like flu-related hospitalizations.

It takes about two weeks after vaccination for protection to set in so start thinking about getting vaccinated now. The HealthMap Vaccine Finder can help find a location near you to get vaccinated.

FluVaxView Interactive! Reports

Each influenza season, CDC analyzes data to develop vaccination coverage estimates for children 6 months-17 years, adults ≥ 18 years, Health Care Personnel (HCP), and pregnant women. During the 2014-15 influenza season, 47.1% of the U.S. population >6 months, 77.3% of HCP, and 50.3% of pregnant women were vaccinated. Although there was a slight increase in coverage among adults and coverage for pregnant women remained above 50%, vaccination coverage could be improved, particularly among young and middle-aged adults as well as HCP working in long-term care facilities.

Influenza vaccination coverage estimates from the 2014-15 season are posted on FluVaxView for the general population, HCP, and pregnant women in reports and in interactive maps and figures
