was 30% higher than the rate for non-Hispanic white women, 58% higher than the

rate for Hispanic women of the same age.
Vital Signs:
Demographic and Substance Use Trends Among Heroin Users — United States,
2002–2013 Heroin use and overdose
deaths have increased significantly in the United States. The greatest
increases in heroin use occurred in demographic groups that historically have
had lower rates: doubling among women and more than doubling
among non-Hispanic whites. The rate in
2011–2013 for men was 3.6 per 1,000 compared with 1.6 per 1,000 for women.
Today’s
Heroin Epidemic Heroin use has increased across the US among men and women, most age
groups, and all income levels. Some of the greatest increases occurred in
demographic groups with historically low rates of heroin use: women, the
privately insured, and people with higher incomes.
Help Children
with Congenital CMV Live Healthy Pregnant women can pass CMV to their unborn baby if they were infected
before or during pregnancy. It is not known what factors lead to a woman with
CMV giving birth to a baby with congenital CMV. CMV is passed from infected
people to others through direct contact with body fluids such as blood, urine,
saliva, blood, breast milk, or semen.
Cardiovascular
Disease Prevention and Control: Interventions Engaging Community Health Workers
The Community Preventive Services Task Force recommends interventions
that engage community health workers to prevent cardiovascular disease (CVD).
There is strong evidence of effectiveness for interventions that engage community
health workers in a team-based care model to improve blood pressure and
cholesterol in patients at increased risk for CVD.
U.S. Census
Populations with Bridged Race Categories CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics used the unrevised July 1,
2010 bridged-race intercensal population estimates to calculate two birth
measures in the 2010 birth reports (the birth rates for married and unmarried
women). Rates using the revised bridged-race intercensal population
estimates are forthcoming.

Leading Causes for 2011 This report presents final 2011 data on the 10 leading causes of death
in the United States by age, sex, race, and Hispanic origin. Leading causes of
infant, neonatal, and postneonatal death are also presented. Comparing 2011
with 2010, no changes occurred in the rank order of the 10 leading causes of
death among females.
Deaths:
Final Data for 2011 Life expectancy for the total population was 78.7 years in 2011, the
same as in 2010. Life expectancy increased for the black and white populations.
White males, black males, and black females experienced an increase in life
expectancy in 2011 compared with 2010. The death rate for females increased for
age groups 25–34 and 45–54.
