The Department of the Interior announced a nearly $15.8 million investment in the Delaware River watershed to improve wildlife habitat, enhance resilience to climate change, and engage underserved communities in conservation. Funding for 45 grants will be provided by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and William Penn Foundation through the Delaware Watershed Conservation Fund and Delaware River Restoration Fund, in partnership with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. These funds align with the America the Beautiful initiative and commitment to investing in locally led efforts and collaborative conservation.�
Assistant Secretary for Insular and International Affairs Carmen G. Cantor announced $389,025 in grant funding provided through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to American Samoa to clean up the second largest wetland ecosystem on Tutuila and replant more than 1,000 mangrove seedlings and riparian tree species across more than 20 acres of degraded wetland areas and 8 acres of degraded mangrove forests, including acreage impacted during the 2009 Tsunami. The project is in collaboration with the American Samoa Department of Agriculture, the Office of the First Lady of American Samoa and the School Garden Initiative,�the Office of Samoan Affairs, the American Samoa Department of Education and 54 local villages. It reflects the emphasis within the America the Beautiful initiative to invest in restoration and resilience.�
An agreement between the Department of Defense and the Polk County Parks� Natural Resources Division, facilitated by Conservation Florida, has conserved a 320-acre property in Polk County, Florida. The property abuts the Lake Wales Ridge State Forest and sits near Avon Park Air Force Range. The conservation easement was made possible in part through the Sentinel Landscapes Partnership. Founded in 2013 by the U.S. Departments of the Interior, Agriculture and Defense, the partnership is a coalition of federal agencies, state and local governments, and private organizations with the goal of strengthening military readiness while conserving natural resources.�
Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs Bryan Newland visited Northern Minnesota where he met with leaders from the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and visited the Grand Portage National Monument to learn about the Tribe�s co-management agreement with the National Park Service. Signed in 1999, the agreement is oldest in the country between a Tribe and the Service and ensures that maintenance of the national monument is carried out by Band members. He also participated in a ceremony with the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and other state and federal leaders to celebrate the return of sacred burial grounds at Wisconsin Point in the City of Superior, Wisconsin.��
