http://www.elabs10.com/ct.html?ufl=0&rtr=on&s=x8pbwi,2ncic,3xn3,5pnw,54t7,1bct,ijo3
On October 02, 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed both the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act and National Trails System Acts into law. The Wild and Scenic Rivers Act is intended to balance our nation’s demands on rivers for hydropower, flood control, and irrigation with the need to protect some of the most outstanding free-flowing river segments and their associated corridors. The National Trails Act conserves a system of several trail types including “Historic Trails”; routes once used for commerce and migration such as the Pony Express and Iditarod Trails, and “Scenic Trails”; routes that provide access to spectacular terrain such as the Pacific Crest and Continental Divide Trails. Bitner Ranch Root Cellar Project

Story by Jen Rovanpera, Archaeologist for the BLM Applegate Field Office
The BLM Applegate Field Office just completed stabilizing and preserving a 1930s root cellar on the historic Bitner Ranch located in Washoe County, Nevada. The root cellar was built in the 1930s to store food and other perishables. It consists of a large cavity (cellar) built into the side of a hill just east of the ranch house. Juniper poles were laid across the top of the cavity, the covered with hay from the nearby meadow. Dirt was then piled onto the roof into order to insulate it further. A small wooden structure with steps leads down into the cellar. Once inside, the maximum height of the cellar is about 6 feet. Shelving units were built along three of the walls. (News.bytes Story)

Local bike shops donated several prizes which were given to the kids such as helmets, water bottles, pins, stickers, etc. This event was co-sponsored by the BLM Redding Field Office and the International Mountain Bicycling Association. Every Kid in a Park Starts Second Year

Last month, the second year of Every Kid in a Park kicked off nationwide. The Every Kid in a Park Program provides free access to fourth graders and their families to more than 2,000 federally managed sites, including national parks, forests, wildlife refuges, and marine sanctuaries. Although most BLM-managed sites don't charge an entrance fee, the Every Kid in a Park program has provided the BLM with an opportunity to reach out to young people who will be the next generation of land stewards. The Lost Coast Headlands near Ferndale were recently considered in the expansion of the California Coastal National Monument. While the headlands offer scenic routes for tourists, locals like Yvette Green, whose family has owned parts of the land for more than a century said the status change for the area is not the best idea for the families living in the area. Interior Secretary Jewell Announces Study Showing Spring Starting Earlier in National Parks

U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell today announced a new study showing that spring is beginning earlier than its historical average in 75 percent of the national parks examined — providing further evidence that climate change is already impacting public lands. Malheur occupation impacts linger throughout the West

High Country News, October 4, 2016
The trial of Ammon and Ryan Bundy and five other participants in the armed occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge is three weeks in, and it doesn’t seem to be going well for the defendants. U.S. U.S. District Court Judge Anna Brown has reprimanded Ammon’s attorney several times for defying orders in the courtroom, and she’s shot down the defense’s argument that the occupation was “adverse possession” — a principle that means taking land into one’s possession by occupying it — and thus lawful. WILDLIFE QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWER
Ture or False bats are the only mammal that can fly?

Answer: True

Bats are the only mammals that can fly. They are also among the only mammals known to feed on blood. Common misconceptions and fears about bats have led many people to regard the creatures as unclean disease carriers, but bats are actually very helpful in controlling the population of crop-destroying insects.
