Wildfires Heat Up Across the West

Homes evacuated. Buildings destroyed. Thousands of acres scorched. The peak of the fire season is yet to come, and it’s only being made worse by climate change. The wildfires blazing in California, Alaska and across the Southwest are threatening communities and natural resources. In Alaska, the first wildfire this season started in late February, yet the season typically begins in April or May. Already, more than 29,000 wildfires have burned over 2.6 million acres in 2016, increasing concerns that we could see yet another busy, dangerous and costly fire season. Be Ready for Wildfire

With unprecedented wildfire behavior and high levels of ‪tree mortality‬ it is important to be aware of evacuation routes even when recreating. Wildfires can strike without warning. No Drone Zone

Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), generally called drones, are gaining in popularity. Although drones are fun to fly, they can be deadly if flown near wildfires. Drones can interfere with wildland fire air traffic, such as air tankers, helicopters, and other firefighting aircraft that are necessary to suppress wildland fires. Aerial firefighting missions including aerial supervision, air tanker retardant drops, helicopter water drops, and smokejumper paracargo occur between ground level and 200 feet above ground level, which is the same altitude that many hobbyist drones fly. California should lead the way, pairing clean energy and protected open space

The Hill, July 11, 2016
Right now California awaits the release of a crucial land management plan that could serve as an example for the entire nation. Once implemented, the Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan (commonly referred to as the DRECP) will stand as a cornerstone to California’s energy independence, facilitating clean, renewable energy production while conserving large stretches of pristine and vulnerable desert lands. California must move forward – demonstrating that conservation and renewable energy development can coexist in the 21st century. Bureau of Land Management 70th Anniversary: America’s Public Land Opportunity

The Pew Charitable Trusts, July 15, 2016
This month marks the 70th Anniversary of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). This agency manages most of our nation’s shared natural heritage—more than 246 million acres of land—primarily in the Western states and Alaska. BLM lands may be closer than you think. Over 64 million Americans—more than 1 in 6—live within 100 miles of public lands managed by the BLM. These lands provide outstanding opportunities for outdoor recreation, including hunting, angling, camping, hiking, boating, climbing, bicycling, photography, wildlife viewing, and many other activities. Quiet, or nonmotorized, recreation on these lands has a $2.8 billion economic impact on our economy. National Parks to Celebrate Latino Conservation Week: Commemorate the NPS Centennial and #FindYourPark

Visit a national park during Latino Conservation Week and camp under the stars, go canoeing, or participate in sunset walks! Many events are happening at national parks across the country from July 16 to July 24 to create opportunities for Latinos to express their passion for the outdoors. Launched by Hispanic Access Foundation in 2014, the nine-day event is designed to break down barriers to the Latino population’s enjoyment of public lands, encourage new opportunities for, and outreach to, this community to use public lands, and inspire the next generation of environmental stewards. Now in its third year, the theme for Latino Conservation Week 2016 is “Enjoying and Conserving our Earth.” (National Park Service News Release) http://www.elabs10.com/ct.html?ufl=0&rtr=on&s=x8pbwi,2lbeh,3xn3,kqj9,axgk,1bct,ijo3

Building History: Architecture in National Parks

For most people, national parks bring to mind gorgeous landscapes of mountains, coastlines, deserts and forests teeming with wildlife. Yet many of the 412 locations in the National Park System include historic buildings that tell stories of the people who built them and how they were used. Some of the architecture is simple, some enters into the realm of art, but all of it is worth preserving. Visit these sites and you’ll find that the works of people can often equal the inspiration of nature.
