The CCC, or Civilian Conservation Corps, was one of them. Young men, the “CCC boys,” were paid to build parks and campgrounds, plant trees, fight fires and maintain roads. But when the country began mobilizing for World War II, the focus changed and the program phased out. Decades later, Gov. Jerry Brown, then in his first term, revived the CCC idea… Legislation creating the California Conservation Corps — with the same CCC acronym — was signed July 7, 1976. We went out to the coast, through the hills of Napa, and then inland to the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument. Just south of the National Monument we climbed in Stebbins Cold Canyon Preserve. This hike overlooks the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument, an area President Barack Obama permanently protected one year ago on July 10. The national monument includes public lands that stretch across Lake, Napa, Mendocino, Solano and Yolo counties. Home to bald eagles and herds of Tule elk, opportunities for hiking and camping abound in this special place.
