Protecting Black Oystercatchers along the Monterey Coast

California Audubon, 2/18/2016
The Black Oystercatcher is considered an indicator for the health of rocky intertidal shorelines. Threats to this habitat are real and growing: sea level rise, ocean acidification, and increased recreational and commercial use of coastal areas. But there is hope — we can secure this bird as its habitat changes by understanding it better. Audubon California coordinates agencies, chapters, and volunteers to monitor Black Oystercatchers. UC Davis Current News, 2/19/2016
There are only a few hundred Amargosa voles left in the world with an 85% chance of going extinct over the next 10 years if intensive management is not implemented. Voles are rodents related to mice and rats. They are notable for the variety of their breeding systems, their extraordinarily high rate of evolution, their diversity, and the fact that many species are indistinguishable to the naked eye. New National Monument a Boon for California’s People and Economy

The Hill, 2/1/2016
California has managed to retain its iconic status as the land of golden opportunity in the face of earthquakes, droughts, wildfires and an economy that has lurched between boom and bust. Despite, or perhaps because of, all this, the state remains one of the most desirable places in the United States to live, work and visit, thanks in great part to its natural beauty. Our View: DRECP needs a little fine-tuning

Victorville Daily Press, Desert Dispatch, 2/24/2016
The long process of putting together the Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan, or DRECP, has been almost wondrous to behold. New hope, scrutiny for Carmel River in wake of dam removal, rerouted channel

Monterey Herald, 2/20/2016
An adult steelhead was spotted in the Carmel River earlier this month, migrating upstream past the point where two white stripes of concrete on steep canyon faces mark the site of the old San Clemente Dam. Redds or nests that female steelhead build for their eggs have been seen above the dam removal and river reroute site, evidence the threatened species is moving upriver unimpeded for the first time in nearly a century. Op-ed: Sage-Grouse Decision is a Call to Action for Western Lands

The Salt Lake Tribune, 2/22/2016
As Westerners gather this week in Salt Lake City to chart the future of sagebrush conservation, it’s a good time to take stock of where we are and where we need to go. In 2010, many thought it was a foregone conclusion that the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service would soon list the greater sage grouse under the Endangered Species Act. This prospect catalyzed the most ambitious and far-reaching conservation effort in the act’s history. The service’s September 2015 decision to not list the greater sage grouse was a remarkable moment in wildlife conservation. To Prevent Another Dust Bowl, the US must Sow the Right Seeds

LiveScience, 2/22/2016
In the 1930s, a serious drought, combined with excessively intensive farming practices, transformed the U.S. Great Plains into a dust bowl, wreaking economic devastation on farmers and their communities. The fertile topsoil that fed a nation was, quite literally, blowing in the wind. The U.S. government was desperate for something — anything — that would anchor the remaining topsoil back to the ground. Connell, Pena: Lands Managers Value Cooperation

East Oregonian, 2/19/2016
As employees of federal land agencies in Oregon, we are entrusted by Congress with the responsibility to help steward and manage federal lands for all Americans. This is a tremendous honor and responsibility we take seriously. And we can’t do it alone. As public lands belong to all Americans, managing these lands is a collective effort. It is a privilege to work alongside local communities, partners, and the public to help achieve the long-term health, productivity, and protection of public lands. Looking past Malheur: America’s Real public lands legacy

The Hill, 2/23/2016
In remote Harney County, Oregon, life is slowly returning to normal as investigators sift through the evidence left by six weeks of intense standoff at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. One person is dead, more than a dozen have been arrested, and this sad chapter in the fight for the future of America’s public lands is nearly closed. But the story is far from over. Unfortunately, America probably hasn’t seen the last of misguided extremists who believe they have the moral authority to take over public lands – lands that belong to every American. GOP Chairwoman Pans Obama Interior Budget as ‘rocky start’ to 2016

The Hill, 2/23/2016
The chairwoman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee on Tuesday blasted President Obama’s budget request for the Department of the Interior as a bad start to his final year in office. Jewell defended the budget proposal and sought to highlight provisions that reflect major Obama administration priorities. “It builds on the successes we’re achieving through partnerships, the application of science and innovation, and balanced stewardship,” she said. WILDLIFE QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWER
Which reptile can accurately predict when the scarce rain of the Mojave Desert will fall?

Answer: b) Desert Tortoise

The desert tortoise can accurately predict when the scarce rain of the Mojave Desert will fall, before the rain falls, the tortoise will trek to its favorite drinking site. While drinking, the tortoise will flush out its entire system, emptying its large bladder and then refilling with water … the amount of water a tortoise can carry depends on its size, but a trip to the watering hole can increase its body weight by 25 to 30 percent.
