Trinidad Lighthouse (BLM Facebook) It was a magical day at the Trinidad Lighthouse, when we were joined by third graders and their teacher to learn about the historic lighthouse and its surroundings. Brief History of Elephant Seals at Piedras Blancas (KCET, 1/28/2015) A rueful smile. That's how the desk clerk at the Sea Otter Motel in Cambria reacted when asked if she could tells us when the Northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) first took up residence on Piedras Blancas Beach, just north of San Simeon. Light Station to add Vintage Entrance Honoring Boucher (The Cambrian, 1/28/2015) When Jim Boucher, park manager for the Piedras Blancas Light Station, died in November, shell-shocked friends, family and members of the Piedras Blancas Light Station Association knew they wanted to create a permanent memorial to him and all he had accomplished in his eight years on the job at a place he loved.

Bill introduced to make Alabama Hills a National Scenic Area (SierraWave Media, 1/28/2015) Congressman Paul Cook introduced HR 496, the Alabama Hills National Scenic Area Establishment Act, legislation that would establish the Alabama Hills National Scenic Area. This designation would encompass 18,610 acres of the scenic Alabama Hills and would preserve it for recreational use by the public and future generations.

Early reservations are requested for the popular hikes, which are limited to 25 participants each and fill quickly.

WILDLIFE TRIVIA ANSWER 

Black-footed ferrets spend about 90 percent of their time underground, where they eat, sleep and raise their young in prairie dog burrows. They are nocturnal, and leave their burrows at night to hunt prairie dogs.
