The Long Trail Home (BLM Facebook) Matt Littrell, a U.S. Marine veteran, completed a cross-country horseback ride from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina to Camp Pendleton, California on Nov. 30. 100 Year Anniversary of the Giant 200-Foot Wave (BLM Website) Join BLM and our partners in a celebration of the much talked about giant wave that hit Pilot Rock and Trinidad Head in a massive storm that blew gale winds over northern California for over 2 weeks in December 1914 and January 1915. Meet at Trinidad Head Saturday, Jan. 10, from 2:00-5:00 pm to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the 200 foot wave that shook the Trinidad Head Lighthouse. Get Lost on California's Lost Coast and Enjoy the Solitude (Sacramento Bee,12/6/2014) The Japanese have this wonderfully descriptive phrase, shinrin-yoku, used for the sublime experience of being immersed in nature, completely enveloped in the lush natural world. Humboldt Native Named New BLM Arcata Field Office Manager (Eureka Times-Standard, 12/5/2014) Molly Brown, currently the manager of a BLM field office in central Oregon, will report to her position in late January or early February, according to a BLM news release. "I was born and raised in Arcata and graduated from Humboldt State University,"Brown said in the release. Colorado River Indian Tribes Sue Feds over 4,000-acre Solar Project (News-Herald, 12/11/2014 The Colorado River Indian Tribes are asking a federal judge to intervene in a 4,000-acre solar project proposed on BLM lands near Blythe, Calif. Officials with the Parker-based reservation say the tribes considers the land part of their ancestral homeland. WILDLIFE TRIVIA QUESTION of the WEEK

Giant Green Anemone (Anthopleura xanthogrammica) How cool are the giant green anemones in the tidepools near the Trinidad Gateway of the California Coastal National Monument? These amazing creatures live up to 50 years and get their green color from a symbiotic green algae that lives in their tissues and provides nutrients. They also obtain nutrients by feeding on small fish detached mussels and other prey by stinging them with their tentacles.
