VOLUNTEERS IN ACTION
"Bitterbrush Planting Volunteers are Heroes
for a Day" (News.bytes Extra)
A cadre of volunteers met in the high desert northeast of Susanville Saturday, March 30, and planted more than a thousand bitterbrush seedlings in an area burned by last summer's Rush Fire. The project, hosted by the Bureau of Land Management's Eagle Lake
Field Office and the Mule Deer Foundation, will be featured as a Field and Stream Magazine "Hero for a Day" project.

 "Climbers Clean-up Jacumba Wilderness" (News.bytes Extra)
Twenty climbers, a baby and a dog helped clean-up the Jacumba
Wilderness on Saturday, March 23, 2013. The group, representing Allied Climbers of San Diego, spent the day combing for trash throughout the Valley of the Moon, a fantastic landscape of eroded granite rock perfect for bouldering and rock climbing. The area, part of the National Landscape
Conservation System (NLCS), comprises the Jacumba Mountains, a wildly remote area that sits on the eastern flank of southern California's coastal peninsular ranges.

"Look Who's Rockin' at the Orange County Children's Water Education Festival" (News.bytes Extra)
On a perfectly sunny day in a campus park with enormous trees, more than 7,000 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th graders converged at University of California, Irvine for the 17th annual Orange County Children's Water Education Festival. Recognized nationally as the largest event of its kind, the festival
featured 65 learning stations with venues as varied as Disneyland, Eco- Magic Show, National Geographic, Jet Propulsion Lab, and BLM's California Coastal National Monument.

"Every Day is Earth Day at the Desert Discovery Center" (News.bytes Extra)
Again this year, the BLM
Barstow Field Office Desert Discovery Center (DDC) partnership joined forces with the Barstow High School Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Academy to host a huge Earth Day event at the local high school on March 28. The theme was "Every Day is Earth Day" and more than 850
5th & 6th grade students and 160 STEM high school students participated.

"BLM Releases Clear Creek Proposed Plan" (BLM, 3/28/13)
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Hollister Field Office released a Proposed Resource Management Plan and Final Environmental Impact Statement Friday for the 63,000-acre Clear Creek Management Area in southern San
Benito and western Fresno Counties.

Seven geology sleuths were spotted last week in California's Chemehuevi Mountains Wilderness. According to
their leader, Dr. Barbara John of the University of Wyoming, they're looking for clues in this remote Mojave Desert mountain range to better understand how earthquakes work. "By studying ancient, inactive faults that have 'surfaced' through weathering and geologic uplifting over millions of years,
we have a window on what is probably occurring miles underground with active faults like the San Andreas," explained Dr. John.

"Cheatgrass Fight Gains New Hope" (Western Farm
Press, 4/4/13)
A strain of naturally occurring soil bacteria tested on national wildlife refuges and other Western lands may soon offer rangeland managers a safe new way to manage cheatgrass, an aggressive plant pest. In the Great Basin states of Nevada, Utah, Oregon and
California, cheatgrass is spreading at the rate of thousands of acres per day, endangering many more animal species and habitats. In addition to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, government agencies expressing interest in the natural cheatgrass inhibitor include the National Park Service, Bureau
of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service.

"Dust Settles on
Dunes Season" (Imperial Valley Press, 4/3/13)
In addition to chocolate bunnies and colorful eggs, the Easter weekend also brought a partial close to this year's dunes season. On any Easter holiday, the dunes can attract 60,000 visitors, said Stephen Razo, Bureau of Land Management
spokesperson. "The weather has a lot to do with the amount of visitors we receive," Razo said. "You won't see too many people riding around in the dead of summer."

The Glenn County
supervisors and the Glenn County Rangeland Association will be bringing back a resolution April 16 informing state and federal authorities Glenn County wishes to be included in any discussions about conservation plans, development of wilderness areas and other issues proposed by their agencies
affecting the western county foothills. Supervisor Steve Soeth of Elk Creek said Glenn County already has an agreement with the Bureau of Land Management to receive input on land issues affecting forest lands.

The U.S. Department of the Interior has become
quite a hit recently with its striking Instagram photos, gaining more than 33,000 followers of the department tasked with "protecting America's great outdoors." The Department of the Interior, known as @usinterior, describes itself as "protecting America's great outdoors and powering our future."
Its account features photos of bison running in Yellowstone National Park, the Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River, Wyoming's National Elk Refuge and Yosemite Valley, among many others. http://www.ca.blm.gov/q2kd |

"Native Plant Gardening Topic of Shelter Cove Workshop" (BLM, 4/2/13)
Information on native plants and the best species for local gardens will be the focus of a free,
family-oriented workshop, set for Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Shelter Cove Community Clubhouse, 1555 Upper Pacific Dr., in Shelter Cove. The event will feature speakers, information tables, kids' activities, slide presentations and a plant identification walk
on Shelter Cove's new nature trail. A new brochure, "Native Plants for North Coast Gardens," will be available. Vendors will be selling native plants, and experts will be on hand to provide advice on gardening with natives.

"Wildfire Awareness Information Event Scheduled" (The Bakersfield Californian, 4/1/13)
The
Kern County Fire Department, in association with Bureau of Land Management and the US Forest Service, is inviting the community to a Wildfire Awareness Expo at the Kernville Rodeo Grounds. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 27, the event will provide the community with wildfire
awareness, hazard reduction and emergency preparedness information, a Fire Department news release stated.
