Schoepp here...

Why not setting the brightness of the screen to zero via the normal Mate settings? In the settings for power management it is possible to reduce the brightness of the screen so it is totaly dark. That saves energy and also lets sighted persons not see the content of the screen..., which is annoying for some of my colleagues regulary ;-).
