Does your sound card require non-free firmware?  If so, you would need an 
unofficial Debian CD which includes the non-free firmware support.  If 
you're using a Creative card with the emu_10k1 module, the bug with the 
sound coming up muted has been fixed, at least here.  If you're talking 
about hardware speech, it no longer works in the new kernels, but works 
great on Squeeze.
