Actually sox is a command line utility so can be run once gnome-terminal
is run. First run gnome-terminal then do what terminal commands you
need to do, then type exit to drop back to your gnome session.

Someone who knows more about Gnome wil have to advise how you would do this,
but given that even players in the console can do this, surely something in
Gnome should be able to.
