ssh to sun terminal type

I need to ssh to a sun machine and then run vi. Actually, I need to run edquota which then runs vi. But I'm having trouble because the terminal type is 'linux'. Apparently, sun doesn't know about that terminal type. I know I can set the terminal type by saying something like 'set TERM=vt100'. The problem with that is that I'm not using a vt100, I'm sshing from a linux box. If I do that, vi doesn't give me an error message but the keys don't work either.
