Do you require a custom kernel? It would be easier to download a kernel with speakup already compiled in. You can do that by going to

OK. So I just get the kernel install it with apt and reboot? No messing with bootloaders is required?

http://people.debian.org/~shane/speakup/kernell/.

The link didn't work for me?

If you are using debian linux, you can do this:

I am on debian. etch. So will the following instructions still work for me?
Also my kernel is version
2.6.18-5

1. Add the following line to your /etc/apt/sources.list file:

deb http://people.debian.org/~shane/speakup/kernel ./

Hmmm I get an error with apt-get update. Can you in close the line in quotation marks?

2. At the linux command line, type

apt-get update

When adding the following line and running apt-get update I get an error about this line.
"deb http://people.debian.org/~shane/speakup/kernel ./"

I also tried
"deb http://people.debian.org/~shane/speakup/kernel";
With no luck.
The error I get is:
"http://people.debian.org/~shane/speakup/kernel/ is not known on line in /etc/apt/sources.list"
Any ideas?
Or could I just download it to my system and install it manually?
If so how?

Thanks for your help. And if you could help me with this I would appreciate it.
