Janina, If you use orca through the gnome-speech-speech-dispatcher setup with speech-dispatcher, you can have the two screen readers living in harmony. This works with espeak and will also if ttsynth can be used through speech-dispatcher. Within orca, speakup says blank, top, bottom etc. so you might want to kill it or turn it off while in gnome anyway.
