Well, there is a difference between stable and old-stable. Gnome uses the odd/even version numbering system the same as the Linux kernel did back before 2.6. Gnome 2.16 is stable. Gnome 2.17 is unstable. Gnome 2.18 is if not stable pretty close to it. Debian Etch is shipping with 2.14, which would be equivalent to me using Debian Woody as my primary OS. And even Debian Unstable isn't packaging Gnome 2.18 yet, someone please correct me if I'm wrong about this, but when I switched from Debian to Ubuntu Gnome 2.16 wasn't even in unstable yet and Ubuntu had it in Edgy, which had already been released for a month. I understand that Debian Stable is supposed to be stable, but 2 major stable versions back is going a little beyond stable, especially from an accessibility standpoint.
