I checked up on the bug you entered. Regarding the sarcasm, perhaps
http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,70179-0.html is of interest.

What he means when he says it isn't a problem with portage is that the
hal package failed to install correctly, which is a problem with the
hal ebuild or the hal sources and not the fault of the portage system.

Regarding the error message, the easiest way to find out what the
error is is probably to pipe the output of emerge to a file and then
tail it. The actual compile error may be around twenty lines from the
end. That hal didn't emerge correctly isn't enough information for the
Gentoo devs. To fix something they need to see something along the
lines of "file x failed to compile due to y."

Best of luck with the issue, if you have interest and patience enough
to pursue it further.

Gnome wasn't the problem, hal was the problem. The error that came back
was couldn't calculate Linux version. I submitted this to bugzilla and
got some sarcastic email back from what was evidently one of the
developers claiming what I had listed as an error message wasn't even a
real error message. Unfortunately for that developer, the script program
does exist and I used it to good effect.
