wireless authentication

I need to connect to a wireless network that makes you load a web page to authenticate. On a Windows machine, you just open a browser and somehow it gets an IP address and allows you to authenticate.

So I tried it with lynx but it does not work. The essid for my network is uwnet-vanvleck. So I do this:

# iwconfig eth0 essid uwnet-vanvleck
# lynx https://wireless.wisc.edu

But lynx returns an error that it can't lookup the host. Maybe lynx doesn't have the tools built in to do the IP fetch thing?
