problem copying files to usb pen drive from linux running on vmware

hello all,
I have a windows xp machine (sp2) and I am running VMWare on it. in
the VMWare I have installed slackware 10.2 with kernel 2.6.13 and all
is working fine.
however I am trying to copy a large amount of files and folders in a
directory tree structure to a pen drive having ext2 files system.
the problem is that when I do it on a fat pen drive it works well but
when I do it with a pen drive having ext2 or ext3 fs the system gets
crashed and vmware gives an error.
I have to reboot the slackware system du to the vertual machine error it gives.
any idea what could be the problem?
thanks,
Krishnakant.
