ESS types are in general supported by the ad1848 module or ad1816, ad1889 A good trick is to try it by looking to the modules (cf. lsmod) a Knoppix or Grml loads when runned. Then you can put the right module in the /etc/modules file (Debian) or its equivalenet under other distros.
