I was doing this on a debian box and got the mplayer built and downloaded the all-20050412.tar.bz2 codecs from xmission.com and tried using the player once that codecs was installed and was told /usr/lib/win32/avisynth.dll couldn't be found. Is that particular dll in the essential codecs and perhaps the codecs procedure just needs a little expansion?

I've had the same problem. Have you installed live.com? If not, that's a good idea. The path to the codecs is also important. You may have to create a symbolic link. I don't have avisynth.dll on my system, but mplayer works fine. Thus, I assume that it's complaining about that because it can't find other codecs.

Good luck!
