Lee, your suggestions were quite helpful; somehow i hadn't quite grasped the idea that i had to choose a small font size, I guess because I'd never actively chosen one before.
I have back the 132 by 43 screen now, using lat1-08. There certainly are a whole bunch of fonts in /usr/share/consolefonts.
