The ISP uses DHCP ... make sure the router is set to use DHCP to
get its address ... and you probably want to set the router to also
give out DHCP addresses. Then, in slackware, run netconfig and set
it to use a DHCP address. You can use static addresses, but since
that's not working, try DHCP.

You should not need to get that address in linux. The router should
automatically get an address, and if configured properly, it should
also automatically give your linux system an address.
