That's not a failure. Or, it's a failure to understand what's going on.

Unless you put festival_server into the background:

festival_server &

That's exactly how it will behave.

Do that, then do something like:

pidof festival

You should get a number back. That's the process ID.

Next, do something like:

festival --tts .bashrc

Note that any text file would work where I indicate .bashrc.

Notice also, that you're now a long way from blaming gnopernicus for
anything.
