I keyed in everything and learned a few things. First apparently sendmail and postfix are fighting. The mailer transport agent identifies itself as sendmail 8.25.x. I was able to get to message accepted for delivery response, and when I connected to my account found the message waiting for me in my inbox. This means some mta is at least working. Pine is set by default to use sendmail.
