Usually, so yes something you did. Although possibly only the route you
took through the install.

What sort of ethernet card is this?

I did a lot of Debian kernel rebuilding (don't you love those kernel
packaging tools) only to find everything I wanted worked fine with the
stock 2.4.18 kernel if you knew what to do.
