Both ecasound and sox can be used to record audio from the soundcard.  Sox
probably came with your distribution.

The realplayer rtk and the trplayer
front-end can be used to play sound files (check out the speakup site).
This includes real-player files from the web.

The soundgrab program can be used to extract portions of a sound file to
separate files and then recombined into a new, complete, file using the
cat command.
