It sounds exactly like JAWS for Windows. I don't know if you're familiar with that.

When I upgraded my desktop machine to RH 9, it stopped working though. I have heard that there is a problem with compatability with newer libs. So it might not work at all if you have a newer version of linux on your machine.

I found that the instructions on the Red Hat site were the best and most complete for getting ViaVoice to work. I don't have the URL but you can do a search on their site.
