two major questions!

Viavoice is no longer supported and uses obsolete libraries -- if you
don't like festival you have two choices:

You can use Freetts which is written in Java so you would have to
fool with that and Freetts does not have indexing, or you could buy
the Dectalk runtime for Linux and gnopernicus will talk with that.

I haven't tried it, but I think yasr will talk with that, too.
