I always do "su -" instead of "su root" The - is the same as -l which means simulate a full login (read the root profile login info) It defaults to user root if I don't specify a user. "su - root" is the same as "su -" It defaults to user root. Sometimes its good to simulate the full login. It's as if you logged in from console.
