The idea that a newbie (or even your average
experienced linux user) should need to do that is
largely obsolete.  Don't do it unless you KNOW that you
have to, for some special reason.  Just use a stock
kernel from your distributor, or the speakup site, if
you use speakup.  If you really need to do it, then
follow the advice of the last poster (below), or from
your distribution's manuals (some have convenient front
ends for this).
