Choosing a linux distribution

I have a friend who raves about a distro of unix called knoppix.
you put a cd in your drive, it autoconfigures itself to your system, and
then goes into x-windows. I think the concept is coool, and wonder if
anyone could look into making a modified distro of this with speak-up. I
would be cool if you could put a cd in your drive, and have a linux system
come up and talking ready to use. The system was designed so you could have
a linux system you could carry on your pocket and boot to from any pc.

Try the distribution for which you can get the most help. I use
Redhat for its ease of installation, configuration tools, package
manager, and such. Have tried early versions of Slackware.
