I have yet to see a portable speech synth which
is small, and works under Linux.  AFAIK, none of the available
pcmcia solutions work.

I personally use viavoice+emacspeak on my laptop.
No external stuff, just a soundcard, and my builtin
speakers.  Since I have a subnotebook, I get
all this below 1 kilogram of weight.
Just my 2 cents.
