Hi Karen, I would start out with Speakup basically what it is a kernel based speech program what in the linux world also call screen readers. There are different flavors of Linux however, such as Redhat http://www.redhat.com and my personal favorite basically because of the upgrade capability Debian http://www.debian.org this is only a couple there are more like Slackware http://www.slackware.com I believ you would have to also go to the Linux how tos at http://www.linuxdocs.org.
