Serial console Install, Slackware on IBM Thinkpad

I'm trying to install slackware on an IBM Thinkpad 486 via a serial
console. I've done this before but not on a laptop. At the boot prompt I type

ramdisk console=ttyS0

But I'm not getting anything on my terminal window on the other machine.
I'm pretty sure that's the right command. I also tried

ramdisk console=ttyS0,9600n8

Still nothing. I'm using the bare.i boot image. I know the null modem cable
& terminal software are set up properly because I use them to work on my
other linux box all the time.

PS. I ran over my Win 98 CD with my desk chair last night so this has got
to work. grin
