First of all, it's not unusual to have video issues with Xconfiguration, especially for older hardware. You should collect some data--about the video card, it's memory, and about the monitor involved. Then, do some searching and reading on line about this hardware. Also, run Xconfigurator again and do different settings. There's no reason to reinstall, but you may need drivers you did not get with your last install--so do some looking around on the net.
