htmltidy is a wonderful tool that I use all the time. I frankly don't know whether it supports validation against an arbitrary DTD, but I doubt it. It is not so much that validators aren't unavailable for XML, however. It is more the issue that even a validator must be tested. ANSI Z39.86 is a particular DTD, and the validation tools we need in the long run must be user friendly and specific to the concepts and usages defined in this digital talking book standard. Our need is for tools that authors and editors can use, not just XML gurus.
